Streambit is a Twitter bot built by @nichodges that watches for people interacting with each other at Stream. Whenever Streambit sees an interaction (a @mention, or a retweet), it transfers a small amount of bitcoin (0.0005BTC) from the user's Streambit account to the account of the person (or people) mentioned.
Each Streamer starts out with a bitcoin balance of 0.005BTC on Streambit. If you're not sure whether you're registered, just send a tweet saying "@streambit hello" and you'll be good to go (you'll receive a confirmation tweet back). To check your Streambit balance tweet "@streambit balance".
Streambit doesn't just do tips, it's helpful as well! Tweet "@streambit what's next?", and you'll get a DM telling you what's on, and what's up next. Handy! Each time you ask the question will cost you a tiny bit of Bitcoin.
If you want to top up your account, tweet "@streambit deposit", you'll get a reply with a bitcoin address - just send a small amount (0.005BTC will give you 10 more tips) to that address to top up your account. If you want to withdraw from your account and use your bitcoin elsewhere, tweet "@streambit withdraw wallet_address" (where wallet_address is a bitcoin wallet address).
The blockchain protocol that sits behind Bitcoin has the potential to radically change how we go about our lives. The ability to do commerce with anyone around the world transparently, almost instantaneously, with no censorship, and without having to trust anyone, is actually quite cool. The ability to store data in the blockchain is potentially even cooler.
We don't know how this technology will change the world if we don't experiment with it. With ad blocking becoming more common, the idea of paying for content is suddenly very interesting. By earning just a few bitcoins through a platform like Streambit, you could set up micropayments to pay small amounts to read news articles, or watch videos. This may be the first time many people at Stream have 'owned' a cryptocurrency like bitcoin - but it most likely won't be the last.
